Graphic Design at WVU is about making real things...two- and three-dimensional, as well as for web and mobile platforms, and even events and programs to solve needs. Our curriculum gives the skills, theory, and aesthetic practice necessary to make it happen.
CASE STUDIES
The Mini-Crisis Survival Kit started with a cigar-box dimension and an assignment
to fill it with any kit you could invent. The student (Jenn Buch) needed to learn
how to construct the box, conceive the concept and what would be necessary to make
it functional, meaningful, and fun with great aesthetics, typography, and good
writing.
The leather, board and paper book on the right develops skills in
construction and sequencing that become useful for exhibit design, book layout and
even planning animation.
A team of graduates and undergraduates tackled an educational game about wetlands
ecology for the eighth-grade level. This was created as a pilot for a National
Science Foundation Grant. Skills of teamwork and distribution of tasks will prove
invaluable for many projects in design. A brand for the Mon River
Trails speaks of the trail origins and the human effort in creating this recreational
possibility in a hilly state. The symbolic drawing style is critical for communicating
poetically and aesthetically, while being clearly understood.
Play-vites was an advanced web class solution to audience development for a children’s
discover museum. Students worked as volunteers with the client before proposing
the idea, then did user-testing to make sure it appealed and functioned for the
children and parents who would use it.

Process
Processes in our curriculum are sometimes about how to create aesthetic forms or compositions, and sometimes about how to research and think in order to author solutions. We don't teach a style, but we teach how to research style and content, so that new styles can each be appropriate for the project being developed and the demographic who will use it.
