Design graduate students are expected to present a paper at a major conference during their stay at WVU. Before that, they attend professional events such as the AIGA GAIN Conference in San Francisco.
Case Study 1
Information graphics, studied in one of the graduate classes, becomes useful when
students pursue their thesis projects. This chart tracks the activities and design
artifacts needed at each phase of a six-week program designed for diabetes patients
to help them increase physical activity.
Case Study 2
To the right, Forrest Conroy has just given a paper on his thesis topic at the
University and College Design Association Education Conference in Chatanooga,
Tennessee. Creekdog is a mobile web site and app that lets hikers and kayakers
report pollution and watershed issues to appropriate organizations.
For the Trans Allegheny Lunatic Asylum we developed an exhibit that could give
the community a voice in the history of that mental institution. A rift had
come between the museum and the community of Weston over fundraising events
that they found insensitive. We hoped to create new dialogue between the parties. Dri-Mate is a product that solves a problem of dripping umbrellas, developed
in the innovation design course.
Graduate work involves rigorous research at each stage of the process practiced
in the undergraduate level. Ethnographic techniques that help the project communicate
effectively with the community who needs it means that language and aesthetics
are not at the whim of the designer. Finding innovative ways to connect with
a group resisting change can be one of the challenges that benefit from social
psychology theorists.
